Lyten is a Silicon Valley startup working on lithium-sulfur batteries and other carbon-based supermaterials.

Latest News: Lyten Acquires Northvolt Dwa ESS, Europe’s Largest Battery Energy Storage Systems Facility
Lyten will take over Northvolt Dwa ESS, Europe’s largest energy storage systems facility, following Northvolt’s bankruptcy earlier this year.
This acquisition gives the U.S.-based startup a production and R&D site in Gdansk, Poland, totaling 269,000 square feet.
Northvolt shut down the site in late 2023, months before filing for bankruptcy in one of Sweden’s most high-profile corporate collapses.
Furthermore, Lyten plans to restart operations immediately and continue fulfilling existing orders, with additional contracts already extending into 2026.
The plant currently supports 6 GWh of energy storage manufacturing and has space to scale to 10 GWh.
Financial details were also not shared, but the deal is expected to close in the third quarter.

Lyten Unveils New Drone Initiative to Enhance U.S. Defense With Lithium-Sulfur Technology
Lyten has launched a dedicated drone propulsion unit to accelerate the production of lithium-sulfur batteries for defense and aerospace use.
The company announced the initiative on May 8, confirming it will allocate part of its California manufacturing lines to meet demand across U.S. defense, UAV, and satellite programs.
Lyten has also begun taking commercial orders for its latest lithium-sulfur battery designed specifically for unmanned aerial vehicles.
This follows an earlier contract with the Defense Innovation Unit, which includes testing the batteries aboard the International Space Station later this year.
The lithium-sulfur cells, developed and produced in the U.S., have reached over 3,000 cycles in trials for satellite use, showing early potential for long-duration and high-efficiency flight systems.

Lyten Starts U.S. Lithium-Metal Production to Strengthen Domestic Battery Supply Chain
On April 16, 2025, Lyten announced it had produced the first battery-grade lithium-metal foil made entirely from U.S.-sourced materials.
This includes both its lithium-metal feedstock and the proprietary alloys used in production.
With this milestone, Lyten now controls a fully localized supply chain for its batteries’ sulfur cathode and lithium-metal anode.
This step comes as federal agencies push for domestic sourcing of critical materials to reduce reliance on imports, particularly from China.
Lyten’s production aligns with this goal, contributing to a more self-sufficient U.S. battery supply chain.
Moreover, Lyten is building out two core stages of domestic lithium processing.
Firstly, in New Freedom, Pennsylvania, the company works with Creative Engineers, Inc. to design and install custom equipment for producing lithium-metal alloy ingots.
Secondly, Lyten uses purpose-built extrusion and rolling systems in San Jose, California to convert the alloys into battery-grade foils.
This site now hosts one of North America’s largest lithium foil processing capacities.
The finished foils go straight into Lyten’s lithium-sulfur battery production lines, completing a vertically integrated process within the U.S.
