Varda Space is carving a position in the commercial space sector by focusing on microgravity applications for pharmaceuticals and advanced materials.
Unlike launch providers or satellite operators, Varda Space is building infrastructure to manufacture products in orbit.
The company recently closed a $187 million Series C round. At the same time, it successfully achieved a commercial space reentry in Australia.

Latest News: Varda Space Secures $187M in Series C to Advance Space Drug Manufacturing
Varda Space announced on July 10, 2025, that it raised $187 million in Series C funding to accelerate its microgravity drug production efforts.
Today we’re announcing two pieces of news: 1) We raised $187 million Series C led by @NatCapCentral and @ShrugCap. 2) We’re expanding into a new lab space to begin work on biologics. Soon, space reentry will be ordinary and drugs made in orbit will be part of everyday care. pic.twitter.com/1WxcAX9l6Y

Natural Capital and Shrug Capital led the round, which also received backing from Lux Capital, Founders Fund, Khosla Ventures, and Peter Thiel.
As a result, Varda’s total funding now stands at $329 million.
According to CEO Will Bruey, the new capital will fund more frequent missions and support the development of Varda’s pharmaceutical lab in orbit.
The lab is also designed to produce drug formulations that cannot be replicated on Earth due to gravitational constraints.
For example, active pharmaceutical ingredients crystallize in more uniform and stable structures in space, which can enhance drug stability and performance.

Varda Space Achieves Historic Commercial Space Reentry in Australia
On February 28, 2025, Varda Space confirmed the successful landing of its W-2 capsule at the Koonibba Test Range, completing the company’s second orbital mission.
The reentry occurred at 6:32 AM Pacific Time after six weeks in Low Earth Orbit.
This reentry marks the first commercial capsule landing on Australian soil.
W-2 carried a spectrometer built by the Air Force Research Laboratory. This capsule is used as a heat shield co-developed with NASA’s Ames Research Center.
It also included Varda’s own internal payload aimed at expanding its pharmaceutical processing platform for future missions.
Just two weeks later, Varda launched its third capsule, W-3, from Vandenberg Space Force Base.
The mission lifted off on March 15, 2025, aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-13 rideshare and used the same Rocket Lab Pioneer satellite bus as its earlier flights.
In addition, the company is currently operating its fourth mission, with a fifth scheduled before year-end.
Since 2023, Varda Space has completed three launch-and-return missions.
Its first, the W-1 capsule, carried out a 27-hour experiment to crystallize ritonavir, an antiretroviral drug used in HIV treatment.

Final Thoughts
Varda’s recent funding activity and mission cadence reflect a company entering a capital-intensive phase. For investors, the appeal lies in its potential to establish recurring revenue streams from orbital production.
If Varda Space can maintain reliability across missions while proving cost-efficiency, it could position itself as one of the first viable supply-side players in commercial space manufacturing.
