Portfolio Beta

The third input is the portfolio’s beta. 

Since a portfolio may hold a mix of traditional assets like bonds and stocks, alongside alternative vehicles such as NFTs or hybrid annuities, beta is computed as the weighted average of each asset’s market sensitivity.

Therefore, the formula is:

Treynor Ratio = (Rp – Rf) ÷ βp

Where:

Rp = Portfolio Return

Rf = Risk-Free Rate

βp = Beta of the Portfolio

So, if your portfolio delivered an average return of 10% over the past five years, the current Treasury bill yield is 4%, and your portfolio’s beta is 1.2, the calculation would be:

(0.10 – 0.04) ÷ 1.2 = 0.05

In this case, the Treynor ratio equals 0.05, meaning your portfolio earned 5% in excess return for every unit of market risk taken.
