Amazon continues to evolve beyond its e-commerce foundation, directing resources into satellite technology, artificial intelligence, and logistics.
In recent Amazon news, the company is investing heavily in its U.S. workforce.
The year also brought headlines from Amazon’s push into the satellite internet market, tariff-related disputes, and corporate restructuring.
Amazon Invests Over $1 Billion to Increase Pay and Medical Benefits
Amazon announced a $1 billion investment to increase wages and reduce healthcare costs for U.S. fulfillment and transportation workers.
The company said the changes will lift average compensation, including benefits, to more than $30 an hour.
Hourly pay will rise to an average of $23, with full-time employees earning about $1,600 more annually.
In addition, starting in 2026, the entry-level health plan will cost employees $5 per week, with $5 co-pays. Amazon said this represents a 34% reduction in weekly contributions.
Amazon Enters Satellite Internet Race
On April 28, Amazon successfully launched A-01 satellite with the United Launch Alliance (ULA) through Project Kuiper, which is the first of more than 80 planned missions to build over 3,200 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites.
Each launch will add dozens of units to Amazon’s growing network, designed to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet across the globe.
Rajeev Badyal, Vice President of Project Kuiper, emphasized the technological leap. He said, “We’ve designed some of the most advanced communications satellites ever built, and every launch is an opportunity to add more capacity and coverage to our network.”
With this initiative, Amazon is positioning itself as a formidable player in satellite broadband, directly challenging SpaceX’s Starlink and aiming to close the digital divide for marginalized regions.
Tariff Transparency Controversy
Amazon became involved in political controversies after reports suggested the company would begin displaying tariff costs directly in product pricing.
As a result, the White House blasted the move as “hostile and political.” This response sparked a media firestorm and a broader debate about pricing transparency in international trade.
Although Amazon denied implementing such a policy, the controversy exposed tensions between Big Tech and government trade strategies. Because of this, it raised consumer awareness about how global trade policies affect everyday purchases. It also highlighted how this could potentially alter how other e-commerce platforms will handle similar disclosures.
Amazon’s Stock Performance
Amazon shares fell 1.6% in early U.S. trading after reports of a $1 billion plan to raise wages and cut healthcare costs for employees.
While the initiative is designed to boost retention and job satisfaction, investors expressed concern over how the added expense could weigh on profitability.
Amazon News: AI Innovations With Pixtral Large and Nova Sonic

Amazon has taken notable innovations in artificial intelligence this year with two major developments: Pixtral Large and Nova Sonic.
Firstly, Pixtral Large, developed by Mistral AI, is now accessible through Amazon Bedrock in seven Amazon Web Services (AWS) regions across the US and Europe. This makes AWS the first cloud provider to integrate the cutting-edge model for enterprise AI solutions.
Meanwhile, Nova Sonic, launched on April 8, showcases Amazon’s commitment to generative AI. This gen AI’s enhanced understanding of tone, inflection, and pacing opens new opportunities in voice-based applications.
Furthermore, through a new application programming interface (API) in Amazon Bedrock, developers can easily create lifelike AI agents for use in customer service, healthcare, education, and entertainment.
Amazon News: Plans for Warehouse Expansion
In line with CEO Andy Jassy’s vision of operating “like the world’s largest startup,” Amazon is pursuing a $15 billion warehouse expansion plan. For this reason, the expansion aims to build approximately 80 new logistics hubs across urban and rural areas in the U.S.
Steve Kelly, Amazon’s spokesperson, noted that these discussions are still being reviewed. He also remarked, “Meetings like this with our capital partners are routine and part of the normal due diligence process, as we consider potential, future projects.”
Although the expansion is still under review, the scale of this initiative reflects Amazon’s ongoing investment in streamlining its supply chain and improving delivery efficiency.
Amazon News: Amazon’s Internal Restructuring
However, the expansion is being balanced with internal restructuring as Amazon announced layoffs affecting its communications and sustainability teams.
According to Drew Herdener, head of PR and corporate responsibility, the move aimed to eliminate roles that were either “too narrowly scoped” or added “unnecessary layers.”
Moreover, this restructuring aligns with Amazon’s updated “hub strategy,” which promotes centralizing teams in the same physical locations to enhance collaboration.
Nevertheless, despite the workforce reductions, Amazon reaffirmed its commitment to its sustainability goals. The company reiterated its 2040 net-zero carbon goal and pledged to run on 100% renewable energy by 2025.
Conclusion: Outlook on Amazon’s 2025 Strategy
From satellite internet to generative AI and massive warehouse projects, Amazon is expanding its footprint across multiple sectors.
Its $1 billion plan to raise wages and lower healthcare costs also underscores how the company is combining its technological ambitions with a recalibration of its labor strategy.
